Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) Published A&E Data, Declares ‘The emergency care system is under severe pressure’ (UK)

A record 25 million people sought emergency care in UK A&E between April 2022 and March 2023 – a 4% increase from last year. The number of people waiting to be admitted to hospital from the A&E department for 12 hours or more quadrupled this year, despite government efforts to address staff shortages and bed occupancy bottlenecks.

EM Job Market in Recovery (USA)

The US EM job market is showing signs of recovery with a 20% increase in openings in fall ’23. Around a third of these are in rural, low volume/acuity facilities.

Sepsis Innovation: Novel ISI Sepsis Test a Life Saver

Sepsis causes 270,000 deaths and costs $38 billion annually in the United States. This study shows that “ISI was both less costly and more effective in preventing mortality than procalcitonin, primarily because of fewer false-negative results. The ISI may provide health systems with a higher-value diagnostic test in ED sepsis evaluation.”
